Denver E Miller GM 2Class Survivor of the USS Atlanta submitted by Billie Jean Gooch - Nov 2011 |
My grandfather, Denver E Miller was on
the USS Atlanta and I believe he was a plank owner. After the Atlanta my Grandfather went on to the USS Iowa until the end of the war. I am not sure what his battle station was but I do know he was a gunner's mate 2nd class at the end of the war. I believe he must have been on the lucky side as he was not injured during the war. He died before I was born so most of the information I have collected is from is discharge papers and the newspaper clipping included below. The separation papers list 3 ships, USS Portland, USS Atlanta, and the USS Iowa. Ribbons issued are American Area Ribbon, Asiatic Pacific 12 stars, good conduct medal, Philippine Liberation 2 stars, and the Presidential Unit Citation. |
The first two
attachments are from his local hometown newspaper upon his return after the sinking of the USS Atlanta. The last attachment is a picture of him and an unknown sailor in Waikiki Beach about the time the USS Atlanta pulled into Pearl Harbor. My grandfather died in 1972. |
